Finding Compassion in the Streets of Braj

My Internship Journey with Braj Animal Care

"Service is not measured by the size of the act, but by the love with which it is offered."

The sacred land of Braj is known for its divine pastimes, where every particle of dust reminds us of love, compassion, and seva. While devotees often come here seeking spiritual fulfilment, there are countless silent souls who call these streets their home—the street animals who rely on the kindness of others for survival. Behind every wagging tail, every hopeful pair of eyes, and every rescued life lies the tireless service of Braj Animal Care (BAC).

Braj Animal Care is much more than an animal welfare organisation. It is a family of compassionate individuals united by one purpose—to serve the voiceless through daily feeding, medical treatment, rescue operations, vaccination drives, awareness campaigns, and community outreach. Every act of service reflects the belief that compassion towards all living beings is an essential expression of devotion.

When I joined Braj Animal Care as an intern, I expected to learn about animal welfare. What I did not expect was how deeply this journey would transform my heart.

Each morning's feeding route became more than simply distributing food. It became an opportunity to witness unconditional trust. The street dogs would recognise the volunteers from afar, eagerly running towards them with wagging tails and joyful eyes. They were not simply waiting for a meal—they were waiting for kindness. Watching this every day made me realise that even the smallest act of compassion can become someone's greatest source of hope.

One experience, however, remains etched in my memory forever.

An injured puppy was taken to the veterinary hospital in Mathura for treatment. What seemed like a simple hospital visit turned into nearly four hours of waiting before an X-ray could finally be conducted. It was tiring, uncertain, and emotionally exhausting. Yet no one gave up. Every volunteer stayed because they knew the puppy could not speak for itself.

When the X-ray was finally completed and the report was in our hands, a wave of relief spread through the entire team. That moment made every minute of waiting worthwhile. It reminded me that animal welfare demands more than compassion—it requires patience, perseverance, and unwavering commitment. At the same time, it also highlighted how much the veterinary infrastructure for street animals still needs to improve so that timely treatment becomes accessible to every life in need.

Another memorable learning experience was interviewing Dr. Pradeep about the health and safety of street animals. I learned how vaccination not only protects individual animals but also prevents the spread of diseases within the community. More importantly, I realised that such initiatives become possible only when people come together through collective support and contribution. Real change begins with unity.

Beyond rescue and treatment, Braj Animal Care believes in educating society. I had the privilege of participating in awareness campaigns where we conducted animal welfare quizzes for children and adults. The enthusiasm of the children was truly heartwarming. Their curiosity, excitement, and eagerness to learn reminded me that compassion can be nurtured from a young age. Every correct answer, every smile, and every new lesson planted the seeds of a kinder future.

One aspect of the internship that I particularly enjoyed was creating content for Braj Animal Care's social media platforms. From recording videos and interviews to contributing to awareness reels, I discovered that social media can become a powerful medium for service. In today's interconnected world, a single video or post has the ability to inspire thousands of people to feed a hungry animal, support a rescue, or simply look at street animals with greater empathy. Awareness truly has the power to inspire action.

The research component of my internship further deepened my understanding of the challenges faced by street animals. Issues such as inadequate vaccination coverage, limited shelter facilities, lack of accessible medical care, and food insecurity revealed that animal welfare is not simply about rescuing animals during emergencies. It is about creating sustainable systems that ensure their long-term well-being.

Perhaps the greatest transformation, however, happened within me.

Before beginning this internship, my perspective towards street animals was largely neutral. Today, I no longer see them as animals wandering the streets. I see lives that long for safety, kindness, and acceptance. They may not speak our language, but they express gratitude in ways that words never could. This experience taught me that compassion has no language—it only needs a willing heart.

The internship also helped me grow personally. It strengthened my patience, consistency, confidence, communication skills, and creativity while teaching me how meaningful social media can become when used for a noble cause. Above all, it taught me that true seva is not always grand or extraordinary. Sometimes, it is simply choosing to care when no one else does.

To anyone considering volunteering or interning with Braj Animal Care, I offer one heartfelt suggestion: take the opportunity. You will certainly learn practical skills, but more importantly, you will experience the joy of serving the voiceless in the sacred land of Braj. The lessons you take home will stay with you far beyond the internship itself.

If I were to describe my journey in just three words, they would be:

Compassion. Patience. Transformation.

I offer my heartfelt gratitude to my respected Gurudev, Gurumaa, the entire Braj Animal Care team, every volunteer, every doctor, and every person who works tirelessly behind the scenes to make this service possible. Thank you for allowing me to become a small part of this beautiful mission.

As I conclude this beautiful chapter, I know I am not leaving empty-handed. I carry with me countless memories, invaluable lessons, and a heart that has been forever changed. Every wagging tail, every rescued life, every feeding route, and every quiet act of compassion has become a part of my own journey. This internship may have come to an end, but the values it has instilled in me will continue to guide me wherever life takes me. For in serving those who have no voice, I discovered a deeper voice within myself—the voice of compassion.

With gratitude and love.
