Walking the Lanes Together

A volunteer’s reflection from Braj Animal Care’s feeding rounds

On my first morning in Vrindavan, I joined a small group of Braj Animal Care volunteers for the stray-dog feeding seva. Carrying a canister of milk, we walked through the familiar lanes where the dogs seemed almost to be waiting for us. Some sat patiently at their usual spots, while others appeared suddenly, emerging from corners as if drawn by instinct. I was hesitant at first, unsure how close to get, but the quiet energy of the volunteers and the gentle presence of the dogs drew me in.

As the bowls were placed down, the dogs approached with trust. Some were eager, others cautious, but each one waited its turn. Watching them drink, tails wagging and eyes alert, any nervousness I had quickly melted away. For a moment, I simply stood there, noticing their calm and contentment, and feeling a quiet joy in being part of something so simple yet so meaningful. The experience was grounding, each small act of care leaving a larger impression than I had expected.

I returned each morning for the next seven days, and each day brought its own little surprises — dogs I had begun to recognise, playful interactions between them, moments of patience and gentle curiosity. The volunteers knew many of them by name and personality, ensuring everyone was fed and cared for. By the end of the week, what had started as hesitation became a quiet rhythm, a deep satisfaction in showing up consistently, and a sense of connection to the lives we were helping sustain.

How You Can Get Involved

Braj Animal Care’s feeding rounds continue every day, powered by the dedication of volunteers. Even a single visit offers the chance to step into this rhythm, share time and care, and witness the quiet impact of your presence. Whether you can volunteer, sponsor a feeding route, or contribute towards supplies, every effort matters in supporting Vrindavan’s street dogs.
